Feature Request: Export or Copy Entire Copilot Chat Conversation in Visual Studio #160034
Select Topic AreaFeature Request Copilot Feature AreaVisual Studio BodyI frequently use GitHub Copilot Chat in Visual Studio to solve complex programming problems. However, I’ve noticed there is no way to select, copy, or export the entire chat conversation at once. Currently, I can only select and copy one message at a time, which is tedious for longer sessions. |

Not ideal, but it gives you the whole chat.

If you control-click on a response in the chat, the context menu includes options to "Copy" (selected response only) or "Copy All" (the entire chat). The content can then be pasted as Markdown and saved. |

I just finished building a little tool to help with this: peckjon/copilot-chat-to-markdown It converts
Minimally tested. PRs welcome. |

I totally get the frustration. Being able to export or copy an entire chat session is essential for documentation, debugging, and knowledge sharing. One reason this feels lacking in tools like Copilot Chat is that the chat history isn’t stored in a way you control, so there’s no easy way to pull it all out at once. In a solution where you own the messaging layer, for example, MirrorFly, you typically have full access to message history and APIs that make exporting to text, Markdown, PDF, or even printing much easier. That’s one of the advantages of building or using a solution where you control storage and metadata. And, if you're curious to explore more similar providers |

This should not be marked as a valid answer because it only exports a
single session. The original question was clearly about the entire
conversation history. If a chat conversation spans over multiple
days/sessions, this is often a tiny subset.
Most of the other answers are for VS Code and do NOT work for Visual
Studio.
I've found the entire chat is stored here:
/(ProjectFolder)/.vs/(ProjectName)/copilot-chat/(short chat thread
id)/sessions/(GUID filename with no extension)
In my case, that single file is a 14MB binary-ish thing. It contains some
binary header info including several class references:
Microsoft.VisualStudio.Conversations.Chat.Help
Microsoft.VisualStudio.Copilot.CopilotChatAgentProvider
Microsoft.VisualStudio.Copilot.Core.WorkspaceAgent
It definitely contains the entire conversation, but it's not just JSON
data.
So I've made a backup of this whole file/folder in hopes that somebody has
an actual method to parse / extract useful info.
When asking the copilot agent itself (claude 4.5 in this case) to export
the entire chat history, it basically behaves the same as doing a "copy
all" on just the last question.
It also seems that the copilot chat gets bogged-down by having a huge
conversation open, so archiving / creating new conversations seems the
right way to go. But there's no clear info on how to retrieve/archive that
info.

How to Submit This Feature Request GitHub Support/Feedback: Submit directly through: In Visual Studio: Help → Send Feedback → Suggest a Feature Or via the GitHub Support contact form Include These Details in Your Submission: Your Visual Studio version Copilot extension version Specific examples of when this would be helpful The fact that this was suggested by Copilot adds a nice meta touch! Potential Implementation Ideas to Suggest Copy button: A "Copy entire conversation" button at the top of the chat panel Right-click context menu: "Export chat..." option when right-clicking in the chat window Command Palette: Add "Copilot Chat: Export conversation" to VS/VS Code commands Format options: Choose between raw text, formatted Markdown (with syntax highlighting preserved), or structured JSON for programmatic use Metadata inclusion: Optionally include timestamps and model information for context |

Its absurd that microsoft markets this product as an enterprise feature without easily auditable AI chat history. Failure to keep these records in a persistent archive that is controlled by the institution/user should really be considered a dealbreaker for any company worried about information security compliance, ESPECIALLY if they are frequently using Copilot to AI generate code for products, data pipelines etc. |

Wait a minute…. I’m running VS 2026 Ver 18.9.2 and I just noticed it has “Export thread” to markdown for viewing, saving, or printing. So … problem solved?

Subject: Re: [community/community] Feature Request: Export or Copy Entire Copilot Chat Conversation in Visual Studio (Discussion #160034)
If you need to save or share an entire Copilot Chat conversation from Visual Studio, there are several ways to preserve the chat content. While the manual approach works for short conversations, it can become tedious for lengthy chats. Below are two practical methods you can use to save your Copilot conversations efficiently.
Method 1: Manual Method
Currently, if Visual Studio does not provide a direct option to export the entire Copilot Chat conversation, you can use the manual approach.
Open the required GitHub Copilot Chat conversation in Visual Studio.
Select the text from each message individually.
Copy the selected content using Ctrl + C.
Open Notepad, Microsoft Word, or another text editor.
Paste the copied conversation using Ctrl + V.
Save the content as a TXT, DOCX, or PDF file as required.
However, this method can be time-consuming when the conversation contains many messages. It may also require considerable manual effort to maintain the conversation's structure and formatting.
Method 2: Use Aryson JSON Chat Converter
If your Copilot Chat conversation is available in JSON format, an easier approach is to use Aryson JSON Chat Converter.
The tool can help convert JSON-based chat data into more accessible formats without manually copying each individual message.
How It Works
Export or obtain the Copilot Chat JSON data containing the conversation.
Launch Aryson JSON Chat Converter<https://www.arysontechnologies.com/json-file-converter/> on your system.
Add the JSON chat file to the software.
Preview the available conversation data before conversion.
Select the desired output format according to your documentation or sharing requirements.
Start the conversion and save the resulting conversation.
This approach can be particularly useful for developers and IT professionals who need to preserve lengthy Copilot conversations for documentation, troubleshooting, knowledge sharing, or future reference.
Which Method Should You Choose?
The Manual Method is suitable for short conversations where only a few messages need to be saved. For longer conversations or multiple JSON chat files, Aryson JSON Chat Converter can provide a more convenient way to process and convert the chat data.

There was a great Export Chart in VS 18.10.x on the Copilot Chat Window. But it is dropped in 18.11.1? Not there anymore. |
|
Or just ask copilot for a tool in python or similar language to export the transcript files in any way you prefer, the format is quite understandable and most models are capable enough to handle that. |
|
It seems like there is a way to open the chat session as editor and save it as a marked down file. I see this feature in the VS Code version that I am using (1.143.1) |

If you control-click on a response in the chat, the context menu includes options to "Copy" (selected response only) or "Copy All" (the entire chat). The content can then be pasted as Markdown and saved.
