@codex These renames break consumers on their next pin bump, and one breaks them silently. Address before merge:

  1. Consumer calls found (local org checkout): phugoid/modes.eigs:90 complex.add of [a, b] (namespaced import → would become complex.complex_add); liferaft/test/test_viz_ui.eigs:165-172 and EigenRegex/tests/test_s12_tester_ui.eigs:149-163 call dispatch of [root, event] after loading lib/ui. After the rename those calls reach the builtin dispatch. Show what each one does on this branch (error loudly vs silently wrong) and paste it.
  2. Namespaced imports: does import complex + complex.add actually clobber the global builtin, or only load_file? If namespaced imports don't collide, prefixing the names (complex.complex_add, ui.ui_dispatch) stutters for the common case. Measure it, and pick the design the evidence supports (e.g. rename only where a collision is reachable, or keep the old name working with a loud deprecation warning for one release).
  3. Classify it honestly: a rename of public lib functions is a breaking change, so the changes/ entry goes in changes/breaking/ with a migration table (old → new), and the PR lists each consumer call site that needs updating on the next pin bump.
Keep the collision gate and its plant. Update evidence/issue-2286.md. — Claude DevBox

Testing

  • ✅ make
  • ✅ python3 tests/test_issue_2286_stdlib_builtin_collisions.py
  • ✅ python3 tests/test_issue_2286_stdlib_builtin_collisions.py --selftest
  • ✅ bash tools/changelog_fragments.sh check b12c9154910e675b4ea7fba3decd8bf764014e10
  • ✅ git diff --check
  • ⚠️ make test-changed (the checkout has no origin/main ref, so the section planner aborted before running tests because it could not derive a merge base)
  • ✅ src/eigenscript tests/modes_check.eigs from the phugoid checkout (reproduced the expected loud cannot call null consumer failure)
  • ✅ src/eigenscript test/test_viz_ui.eigs from the liferaft checkout (reproduced the expected loud builtin-dispatch arity failure)
  • ✅ src/eigenscript tests/test_s12_tester_ui.eigs from the EigenRegex checkout (reproduced the expected loud builtin-dispatch arity failure)

@codex CI is red on d0f46bd from the renames reaching tests and gates you didn't update. Failing (run 41232663930):

  • linux / gcc (job 124630011209): FAIL: [36] Import System — math has abs, expected true, got false; tests/test_stdlib_fixes.eigs:21: ASSERT FAIL: SF1 dot normal; EXAMPLES: 28 passed, 1 failed (find which example).
  • gate self-tests (job 124630011153): FAIL tools/ui_surface_check.sh exit 2 — the UI surface check still expects dispatch.
  • install.sh (job 124629945104): same math has abs assertion.
  • jit differential and the release dry-runs also failed; check whether each is the same cause and paste its failing line.
Your inventory missed every caller outside lib/ and the tests you touched. Re-derive the call-site population across the whole repo (tests/, examples/, tools/, docs/, editors/, the LSP/stdlib index data), update each, and show the grep that now prints nothing for the old names as lib members. Then run the full test entry point and the full selftests locally and paste both tails. — Claude DevBox

Summary

Testing

  • ✅ bash tests/test_examples.sh src/eigenscript — 29 passed, 0 failed, 2 intentionally skipped.
  • ✅ bash tests/test_lsp.sh — 196 passed, 0 failed.
  • ✅ python3 tools/ui_surface_check.py — 381 definitions tested and documented with no gaps.
  • ✅ bash tools/stdlib_index_check.sh — 181 builtins and 79 modules documented.
  • ✅ bash tools/jit_diff.sh — 299 programs passed JIT/OSR differential comparison against the interpreter.
  • ✅ python3 tests/test_issue_2286_stdlib_builtin_collisions.py — passed as part of the full self-test run.
  • ✅ rg -n --hidden -g '!editors/vscode/node_modules/**' -g '!build/**' -g '!.git/**' '\b(complex\.add|math\.(abs|dot)|stats\.(sum|mean)|string\.join|ui\.dispatch)\s+of\b' . — produced no matches.
  • ✅ Shared-scope inventory script checking files that load math, stats, string, ui, lab, or complex for stale bare renamed calls — produced no matches.
  • ✅ git diff --check
  • ⚠️ bash tools/selftests.sh --all — 62 passed and 3 environment/history-dependent checks failed: Valgrind is unavailable, the shallow checkout lacks the formatter comparison parent, and tag v0.46.0 is unavailable for the observer anchor.
  • ⚠️ make test — completed the full entry point with 4,588/4,596 passing. The initial run lacked PyYAML, the environment lacks SDL2 for one graphics dependency probe, and it ran before the corrected LSP expectation; the LSP suite subsequently passed independently after the fix.

@codex Round 3: the review on b787918 lists callers still on the old names, and CI is red again (linux/gcc 124653028922 + release dry-runs). Fix every open thread: migrate examples/debugger.eigs (ui.dispatch), tests/test_ui.eigs, tests/ui_native_input.eigs, tests/test_ui_containment_gfx.eigs (dispatch), tests/test_stdlib_fixes.eigs + examples/stdlib_demo.eigs (dot), tests/test_lab.eigs:41,65 (values), tests/test_string_math.eigs (load math before math_abs, or keep the builtin abs there since that section tests builtins). Keep the mean dictionary KEY in stats/lab results: only the function name collides, not a dict field. This is the third round on the same class, so change the method: (1) derive the caller list mechanically: for each of the 8 old names, git grep -nwE '(\\b|\\.)<name> of' across the whole repo (examples/, tests/, tools/, docs/, editors/, lib/) and paste the before/after output; (2) run the full test suite (make test or tests/run_all_tests.sh) and the examples check, and paste the final summary lines showing 0 failures. Do not stop until both are clean. — Claude DevBox
