Description

Adds Apache Doris (DorisEngineAdapter and DorisConnectionConfig) engine support to SQLMesh across Doris 2.1+ through 4.1.5+, including native Doris OLAP tables (UNIQUE KEY Merge-on-Write / Merge-on-Read, DUPLICATE KEY, AGGREGATE KEY) and Doris-backed external multi-catalog lakehouse tables (Apache Iceberg, Apache Paimon, Apache Hive, and read-only Lance / Hudi / Delta Lake / LakeSoul catalogs and TVFs).

Closes #5875
Supersedes / builds upon #5033 (with Co-authored-by: xinge.ji <xinge.ji@outlook.com>)

Key Capabilities

  • Connection, TLS & Session Management (DorisConnectionConfig):
    • Connects via PyMySQL (sqlmesh[doris]) with autocommit=True, optional pre_ping, and safe one-shot cursor reconnect on non-timeout MySQL-protocol disconnects (OperationalError 2006 / 2013 / 2055) in both _execute and _fetch_native_df strictly for read-only / idempotent session statements (SELECT, AST-verified WITH ... SELECT / set-operation CTE queries, SHOW, DESCRIBE, DESC, EXPLAIN, USE, SWITCH) outside active transactions, restoring active catalog (SWITCH) and database (USE) state across reconnects while never retrying mutating statements (including WITH ... INSERT).
    • Supports catalog (and get_catalog() / get_current_catalog()), session_variables (e.g., workload_group, query_timeout), ssl (ssl_ca, ssl_cert, ssl_key, ssl_verify_cert, ssl_verify_identity, ssl_disabled, or dict ssl), and configurable connect_timeout / read_timeout / write_timeout.
    • Registered in FORBIDDEN_STATE_SYNC_ENGINES with a clear configuration error guiding users to configure a dedicated state_connection, and included in sqlmesh init templates and documentation (docs/integrations/engines/doris.md).
  • Native Doris OLAP Table Models, Key Prefix Ordering & Schema Evolution:
    • Supports UNIQUE KEY (including INCREMENTAL_BY_UNIQUE_KEY auto-propagation, Merge-on-Write properties, compaction_policy (time_series / size_based), function_column.sequence_col / sequence_type, and custom order_by / cluster_by sort keys emitted as CLUSTER BY (...)), DUPLICATE KEY, and AGGREGATE KEY, plus table_type / keys aliases.
    • Automatically reorders OLAP key columns to the leading prefix of CREATE TABLE schemas, CTAS projections (_reorder_olap_columns & _reorder_unannotated_ctas_query across single SELECT, UNION ALL, CTE, and unaliased aggregate/arithmetic projections), insert_append, merge, insert_overwrite_by_partition, insert_overwrite_by_time_partition, and _scd_type_2. Coerces TEXT/STRING key columns (e.g., from Pandas DataFrames or unannotated SEEDs) to VARCHAR(255) and enforces Doris's 36-byte shortkey index prefix budget so FLOAT/DOUBLE/COMPLEX columns never land ahead of key columns.
    • Preserves table aliases (AS t) when rewriting self-referencing replace_query statements to temporary staging tables in both EngineAdapter.replace_query and DorisEngineAdapter.replace_query.
    • Shortens > 64-character _schema_tmp identifiers across DDL, _truncate_table, fetchall, fetchdf, execute, and information_schema.tables lookups to satisfy Doris's 64-character identifier limit.
    • Normalizes Doris DESCRIBE types (DECIMALV3, DATETIMEV2, DATEV2, TIMESTAMPTZ, LARGEINT/INT128, TINYINT(1)/BOOLEAN, STRUCT, ARRAY, MAP, BITMAP, HLL, AGG_STATE), supports same-type precision widening (DATETIME(p1) -> DATETIME(p2) and TIMESTAMPTZ(p1) -> TIMESTAMPTZ(p2)), guards get_alter_operations against invalid MODIFY COLUMN or destructive DROP+ADD operations on OLAP key columns, and waits for asynchronous OLAP SCHEMA_CHANGE jobs in both alter_table and create_index.
    • Supports RowDiff / TableDiff (concat_columns & normalize_value) across scalar, TIMESTAMPTZ, complex (ARRAY, MAP, STRUCT, JSON, VARIANT via CAST(... AS STRING)), INT128 (CAST(... AS LARGEINT)), BITMAP (BITMAP_TO_STRING), and HLL (HLL_TO_BASE64) columns.
  • Native MERGE INTO, DeleteHandler, Logical Merge & Incremental Overwrite Semantics:
    • Uses native Doris MERGE INTO (SUPPORTS_MERGE = True on Doris 4.1+ for UNIQUE KEY Merge-on-Write and Iceberg tables) with unaliased SET col = ... targets, explicit INSERT (cols) VALUES (...) column lists, and automatic fallback to transactional DELETE + INSERT on Doris < 4.1 or when merge_filter / DELETE clauses are present.
    • Rewrites DELETE FROM ... WHERE col IN (SELECT ...) (and CONCAT_WS composite keys) into Doris's DELETE FROM target AS _t1 USING (...) AS _t2 WHERE ... syntax for UNIQUE KEY tables, expanding any OR in sibling conditions into separate OR-free statements.
    • Provides automatic fallback to cardinality-aware batched literal DELETE (_delete_by_literal_keys) for DUPLICATE KEY, AGGREGATE KEY, and external catalog tables without emitting OR or BETWEEN predicates rejected by Doris's DeleteHandler.
    • Rewrites time-truncation partition DELETE predicates (DATE_TRUNC, TO_DATE, DATE, YEAR, QUARTER, MONTH, WEEK, DAY, HOUR, MINUTE, SECOND across =, !=, >=, >, <=, <, IN, NOT IN, and IS [NOT] NULL) into half-open bare-column range predicates (col >= <low> AND col < <high>) that Doris's DeleteHandler and partition pruner accept.
  • Doris 4.1+ Dialect, Indexing, Vector & Full-Text Search, and Lakehouse Time Travel:
    • Supports TIMESTAMPTZ / TIMESTAMPTZ(p) data types and AT TIME ZONE -> CONVERT_TZ(..., @@time_zone, <tz>).
    • Supports Iceberg / Paimon / Hudi snapshot and branch/tag time-travel queries (FOR TIME AS OF, FOR VERSION AS OF, @branch(name), @tag(name)) with full upstream lineage extraction in find_tables() and table qualification without misinterpreting @branch/@tag as SQLMesh macros.
    • Supports Doris ALTER TABLE ... ADD INDEX ... USING INVERTED|ANN|NGRAM_BF|BITMAP (...) PROPERTIES (...), BUILD INDEX idx ON tbl [PARTITION[S] (...)] (including inside @IF post-statements with @this_model resolution), full-text search predicates (MATCH, MATCH_ANY, MATCH_ALL, MATCH_PHRASE, MATCH_PHRASE_PREFIX, MATCH_REGEXP, MATCH_PHRASE_EDGE, SEARCH(...)), and vector distance functions (L2_DISTANCE, COSINE_DISTANCE, INNER_PRODUCT, L1_DISTANCE, L2_DISTANCE_APPROX, INNER_PRODUCT_APPROX).
    • Supports Doris 4.1+ Iceberg table maintenance and branching post-statements (ALTER TABLE @this_model EXECUTE rewrite_data_files(...), expire_snapshots(...), remove_orphan_files(...), fast_forward(...), cherrypick_snapshot(...), rollback_to_snapshot(...), rollback_to_timestamp(...), set_current_snapshot(...), and ALTER TABLE @this_model CREATE|REPLACE|DROP BRANCH|TAG ...), plus ALTER SYSTEM RENAME COMPUTE GROUP <old> <new>.
  • Multi-Catalog Lakehouse Support (CatalogSupport.FULL_SUPPORT — Iceberg, Paimon, Hive, Lance):
    • Supports 3-part catalog.db.table naming, SWITCH <catalog>, catalog-scoped information_schema.tables + mv_infos() discovery, and automatic catalog detection via SHOW CATALOGS.
    • Supports writable Apache Iceberg (table_format = 'iceberg' / ENGINE=iceberg, 'write-format', 'compression-codec', Iceberg partition transforms DAY, MONTH, YEAR, HOUR, BUCKET, TRUNCATE, and native MERGE INTO), Apache Paimon (table_format = 'paimon' / ENGINE=paimon, 'file.format', and automatic 'primary-key' synthesis from unique_key + partitioned_by), and Apache Hive (table_format = 'hive' / ENGINE=hive, 'file_format').
    • Supports reading Lance ('type' = 'lance' catalog on Doris 4.1.4+ and s3()/local() TVFs with 'format' = 'lance'), Hudi, Delta Lake, and LakeSoul tables with clear read-only write guards on DDL/DML writes.
  • Views & Materialized Views (CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW, Async MTMV & Sync Rollup MV):
    • Supports both asynchronous multi-table materialized views (BUILD IMMEDIATE|DEFERRED, REFRESH COMPLETE|AUTO ON MANUAL|COMMIT|SCHEDULE, RECREATE_MATERIALIZED_VIEW_ON_EVALUATION = False) and synchronized single-table rollup materialized views (materialized_type = 'SYNC').

Test Plan

  • Unit & Dialect Tests:
    • 102 passed, 0 failed in tests/core/engine_adapter/test_doris.py, plus tests/core/test_connection_config.py, tests/core/test_dialect.py, and tests/core/engine_adapter/test_base.py -k "replace_query".

@brucearctor Appreciate your PR on this!

A few blockers:

  1. create_view drops the view and then recreates it. For regular views, please use CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW (supported since Doris 2.0, and what the StarRocks adapter does). As written, every promotion briefly removes production views. If the CREATE fails, the production view is gone until the next successful plan. If there's a Doris limitation forcing the drop, please note it in a code comment.
  2. The reconnect retry in _execute re-sends write statements. After error 2013 the statement may already have run, or may still be running if read_timeout fired. Re-sending an INSERT can then duplicate rows on duplicate-key tables (the Doris default). Please retry only reads and other statements that are safe to repeat, or rely on pre_ping.
  3. Mark Doris as community-contributed. Please add the standard notice under the title in docs/integrations/engines/doris.md, matching StarRocks, Db2, Fabric and RisingWave:

Optional

  • Fail instead of warning when a view targets an external catalog. Right now create_view logs a warning and skips. With the wrong config, a plan reports success but the environment's views are missing. A clear error pointing to virtual_environment_mode: dev_only and environment_catalog_mapping would enforce what the docs already require.

Thanks for the thorough review @StuffbyYuki! All feedback items (plus several additional StarRocks-aligned improvements and edge-case fixes) have been addressed:

  1. CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW for regular views:
    • create_view now delegates regular views (materialized=False) directly to super().create_view(...) so replace=True emits atomic CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW without dropping the view first.
    • For materialized views (materialized=True), where Doris does not support OR REPLACE, all MV properties (build, refresh, refresh_trigger, partitioned_by / partition_by, distributed_by) are validated and built before DROP MATERIALIZED VIEW IF EXISTS executes so a malformed configuration never drops an existing MV.
  2. Safe read-only reconnect retry (_execute & _fetch_native_df):
    • Reconnect-and-retry on OperationalError (2006 / 2013 / 2055) now only runs for read-only / idempotent session statements (SELECT, WITH, SHOW, DESCRIBE, DESC, EXPLAIN, USE, SWITCH via _is_safe_to_retry_sql), never retries when a read_timeout fired (TimeoutError / "timed out"), and never retries write statements (INSERT, DELETE, CREATE, DROP, ALTER, TRUNCATE) so duplicate rows cannot be inserted on DUPLICATE KEY tables.
  3. Community contribution notice in docs:
    • Added the standard !!! info community contribution banner at the top of docs/integrations/engines/doris.md.
  4. Fail fast when create_view targets an external catalog:
    • create_view now raises SQLMeshError when targeting a non-internal catalog, instructing the user to configure virtual_environment_mode: dev_only and environment_catalog_mapping (while keeping drop_view on external catalogs a safe no-op during cleanup).
  5. Additional hardening & test coverage (75 unit tests + 57 integration tests):
    • Aligned with StarRocksEngineAdapter: RECREATE_MATERIALIZED_VIEW_ON_EVALUATION = False, RESOLVE_TABLE_REFS_IN_PHYSICAL_PROPERTIES = frozenset({"excluded_trigger_tables", "source_table"}), SUPPORTS_TUPLE_IN = False, FOR UPDATE lock stripping, single-column create_index guard, partition_by alias support, and automatic REFRESH MATERIALIZED VIEW <mv> AUTO when a BUILD DEFERRED MV has audits.
    • Hardened CTAS / DataFrame / SEED STRING key coercion to VARCHAR(255), Iceberg BUCKET / TRUNCATE partition transforms, 2-part internal Iceberg CTAS, self-referencing replace_query on new tables, top-level OR / tuple-IN / bare-boolean-column DELETE rewrites, and get_alter_operations key-column guards.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to a87ff

This PR adds Doris engine support, and the earlier concerns about shared replace_query behavior, type compatibility, merge key handling and ALTER parsing no longer apply at the current head. No concrete merge-blocking defect remains. Confirm that the reported CI failures are fixed before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to a87ff

Catalog identity can diverge during table replacement and connection recovery, potentially mixing data between catalogs accessible to the configured database account. Native table refreshes also lack transaction-level rollback between deletion and insertion. These risks are conditional and bounded by database permissions, but warrant design-level attention.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new matcher can confuse configured and effective catalog identity. With configured catalog A, a session switched to B, target A.s.t, and source s.t, the source resolves in B but is classified as the A target and replaced with a temporary copy of A.s.t. This can silently overwrite the target using the wrong source. Public catalog switching permits the prerequisite state, and full catalog support bypasses session-routing adjustments. Fully qualified references avoid this example; routine rendered-model reachability and an authorization bypass were not established.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Reconnect recovery can inherit another worker's catalog. set_current_catalog writes last-switched state onto the shared pool and configuration, while a worker's local active catalog initially remains unset. If that worker reconnects after another worker switches catalogs, restoration chooses the shared last-switched value before its configured default. A replayed two-part reference can therefore read a different catalog and propagate that data downstream. The existing isolation test exercises local fields directly, not the shared fallback populated by set_current_catalog. Exposure remains within the configured account's accessible catalogs.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Native OLAP replacement inherits the shared DELETE_INSERT sequence while Doris enables autocommit and disables transactions. A successful deletion followed by insertion failure therefore has no transaction-level rollback and can leave the target empty or partially populated. For self-referencing replacement, the temporary copy is dropped when the replacement body exits exceptionally, rather than retained as a recovery asset. The shared sequence predates this PR, but exposing it through the new nontransactional adapter creates this Doris failure-containment risk. External lakehouse replacement selects a different overwrite strategy when its conditions apply.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated identity risks are scoped to sessions sharing a Doris adapter or connection pool and to catalogs accessible under its configured credentials. They can affect data read or materialized downstream; cross-account privilege escalation and exposure beyond those grants were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller able to switch the session catalog and supply mixed-qualified replacement SQL can trigger wrong-source substitution. Separately, one worker's catalog switch can influence another worker's reconnect through shared fallback state. These are conditional data-isolation paths, not evidence that an unauthenticated caller gains SQL execution.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The examined execution inputs come from connection configuration, model statements, and adapter callers. Model pre-statements execute through the adapter, while catalog switching uses a quoted identifier. Database authentication and authorization remain at the external Doris boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — One-shot retry requires a recognized non-timeout disconnect, no active transaction, and an eligible statement. WITH statements receive an additional AST query-type check. Failed restoration closes the connection and leaves restoration pending, limiting continued use after a failed recovery; successful restoration still depends on the catalog identity selected by the recovery logic.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use one per-connection catalog/database identity for SQL name resolution, reference rewriting, and reconnect restoration. Avoid another worker's state as a recovery fallback, and fail closed when the original namespace cannot be recovered. Native replacement could additionally retain an explicitly owned recovery copy until publication succeeds.

Hoist the default-catalog lookup out of _is_target_table.

_is_target_table is called for every exp.Table in the query, in find_all and again in the add_transform lambda. For each table that does not match the target by exact name, it evaluates self.default_catalog twice. It also re-copies and re-normalizes the target on every call.

The default_catalog property (Lines 287-296) falls back to self.get_current_catalog() when _default_catalog is unset. On adapters that use a catalog function, that fallback is a database round trip. Before this change, the call happened only in temp_table, and only when the query was self-referencing. Now every engine pays it on every replace_query call that references a table.

Compute the default catalog and the normalized target once, before the helper is defined.

sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/doris.py:159-171
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not classify DATETIME and TIMESTAMPTZ as interchangeable.

The new rules mark both conversions as non-destructive schema changes. Doris stores DATETIME without time-zone semantics, but converts TIMESTAMPTZ values using the session time zone. A forward-only schema change can therefore proceed under the default additive-change policy even though the conversion can change timestamp meaning. Remove the cross-type compatibility entries, or require an explicit migration that defines the intended time-zone conversion. (doris.apache.org)

sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/doris.py:3578
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Read key columns from the merge target, not the last described table.

When target_columns_to_types is already known, this branch does not describe target_table. The thread-local _last_described_key_cols can still contain keys from an earlier columns() call for another table. If that table has a key named like a value column in this target, the generated merge omits that value column from UPDATE SET. Resolve the target's key metadata before filtering assignments, or use only keys established for this merge.

Update the key_col_names_lower population in the merge flow to use key metadata
resolved for target_table, rather than potentially stale
_last_described_key_cols; ensure the target’s keys are established even when
target_columns_to_types is already known before filtering update assignments.

Copy ALTER_PARSERS before applying Doris-specific overrides.

DorisParser inherits MySQLParser and does not define its own ALTER_PARSERS. The in-place update therefore changes the dictionary used by MySQLParser, including its ADD and DROP handlers.

Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Heavy lift

Match aliased self-references by table identity.

If replace_query("db.tbl", ...) reads internal.db.tbl AS t and internal is the default catalog, _qualified(node, default_catalog) still has alias t. The target does not. SQLGlot compares that alias as part of the Table, so _is_target_table returns False. (github.com)

On Doris’s DELETE_INSERT path, replacement can then delete db.tbl before the source query reads it. Compare the catalog, database, and name without the alias. When rewriting the reference to the temporary table, preserve alias t so qualified column references remain valid.

Gate the fetch-level disconnect retry with the same read-only check used by _execute.

Doris _fetch_native_df retries a disconnected fetch by calling super()._fetch_native_df(query, ...) again. That call runs execute on the same SQL. The retry condition checks only is_disconnect, is_timeout, and the transaction state. It does not call _is_safe_to_retry_sql. If a caller passes a non-idempotent statement through fetchdf, a disconnect after the server applies the statement can cause that statement to run twice. The _execute write guard does not stop this, because it governs only the retry inside _execute.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude WITH from the direct retry allowlist.

Doris supports CTE-prefixed INSERT statements. Raw SQL passed to DorisEngineAdapter.execute reaches _execute, where a recognized disconnect can resubmit the original SQL. Since _is_safe_to_retry_sql accepts every statement beginning with WITH, an ambiguous disconnect can cause a non-idempotent insert to run twice.

Remove WITH from this prefix classifier, or parse the statement before allowing CTE-prefixed retries. Keep this change separate from the fetch-level retry guard.

Keep NULL rows when rewriting a non-aligned DATE_TRUNC inequality to TRUE.

For a non-aligned literal, the NEQ branch replaces DATE_TRUNC(col, unit) != literal with TRUE. For a non-NULL col, the original predicate is also TRUE. For a NULL col, the original predicate is NULL, so the row is not deleted. The rewritten predicate deletes those rows. When this predicate is the only condition, delete_from calls _truncate_table, which removes every row, including rows where the column is NULL.

The negated forms have the same problem. NOT (DATE_TRUNC(col, unit) = non-aligned literal) is rewritten to TRUE, and a negated non-aligned IN with no aligned values is also rewritten to TRUE.

A non-NULL value always truncates to a non-NULL value. Replacing the constant with col IS NOT NULL therefore matches the original predicate for non-NULL rows and keeps NULL rows.

Suggested fix
                             else:
-                                replacement = exp.true()
+                                replacement = exp.not_(
+                                    exp.Is(this=col_expr.copy(), expression=exp.Null())
+                                )
                             if not aligned_ranges:
-                                replacement_in: exp.Expr = exp.true()
+                                replacement_in: exp.Expr = exp.not_(
+                                    exp.Is(this=col_expr.copy(), expression=exp.Null())
+                                )

The unit test test_doris_not_pushdown_week_quarter_and_candidate_extraction expects a = 1 for the DATE_TRUNC(ds, 'week') != '2024-01-17' AND a = 1 input. That expectation must change to keep the ds IS NOT NULL condition.

@StuffbyYuki Ready for another look and CI workflow approval when you have a chance!

Since the previous update, we also expanded and hardened the adapter and test suite against live Apache Doris 4.1.5:

  • Doris 4.1.5 & Multi-Catalog Lakehouse Support:
    • Upgraded the Docker integration suite (tests/core/engine_adapter/integration/docker/compose.doris.yaml) to apache/doris:fe-4.1.5 & apache/doris:be-4.1.5.
    • Added native Doris 4.1+ MERGE INTO (SUPPORTS_MERGE = True for UNIQUE KEY Merge-on-Write and Iceberg v2 tables, with automatic fallback to transactional DELETE + INSERT on Doris < 4.1 or when merge_filter / DELETE clauses are present).
    • Added TIMESTAMPTZ / TIMESTAMPTZ(p) type mapping and precision-widening support, OLAP custom sort keys (CLUSTER BY (...)), and asynchronous SCHEMA_CHANGE job polling in alter_table and create_index.
    • Extended external multi-catalog lakehouse support across writable Apache Iceberg, Apache Paimon, and Apache Hive tables, plus read-only Lance (4.1.4+), Hudi, Delta Lake, and LakeSoul catalogs/TVFs with explicit write guards.
    • Added Doris 4.1+ indexing (INVERTED, ANN vector, NGRAM_BF, BITMAP + BUILD INDEX), full-text search (MATCH_*, SEARCH()), vector distance functions (L2_DISTANCE_APPROX, INNER_PRODUCT_APPROX, COSINE_DISTANCE, L1_DISTANCE), and Iceberg time-travel (FOR TIME/VERSION AS OF, @branch, @tag) & table maintenance (EXECUTE rewrite_data_files(...), CREATE/REPLACE/DROP BRANCH/TAG).
  • Verification & Hygiene:
    • 102 passed in tests/core/engine_adapter/test_doris.py
    • 12 passed in tests/core/engine_adapter/integration/test_integration_doris.py (and 77 passed across test_integration.py -m "doris")
    • All commits signed off (Signed-off-by:) per DCO and all CodeRabbit review findings resolved.

@StuffbyYuki All Doris unit, style/CICD (Python 3.9–3.13), DCO, and Docker integration (engine-tests-docker (doris)) checks are green now!

Digging into the single failure in cicd-tests-windows (job 124981396365): it's an unrelated pytest-xdist race in tests/core/engine_adapter/test_duckdb.py (test_ducklake_partitioning failing on duck_conn.install_extension("ducklake") with _duckdb.IOException: IO Error: Could not move file: Access is denied when two Windows workers install the ducklake extension concurrently after #6034 added two more ducklake tests).

It's also hitting main (run 41349768739) and other open PRs (#6169 / run 41330108586) — opened #6182 and a standalone fix in #6183.
