See where your disk space went.
A fast, zoomable treemap of your drives, in the spirit of SpaceMonger.
Every file and folder is a box sized by the space it uses. Sample data.
Your drive is full and you have no idea why. SpaceSharp reads the whole thing in seconds and draws it as one picture: folders are frames with a title bar, files are boxes inside them, and the biggest boxes are where your space went. Zoom into any folder, type a filter in plain words, see what changed since last time, find the files you keep twice and the folders with nothing in them, and send what you do not need to the Recycle Bin without leaving the map.
One portable .exe, or an installer that updates itself. Free, open source, code-signed, and it sends nothing anywhere. Since 2.3 SpaceSharp is one app for Windows, macOS and Linux, built on Avalonia; the Mac and Linux packages follow in a later release.
- Click a drive. The NTFS file table is read directly, so a terabyte takes seconds, not minutes.
- Look at the big boxes. That is your space. Double-click to zoom in, Backspace to come back up.
- Type what you are looking for.
videos over 1GB older than a yeardims everything else. Select the matches, press Del, done.
- It is fast where it counts. A drive with a million files is on screen before you have finished reading this sentence, and a folder scan draws the map while it runs. Scans are saved, so yesterday's map is one click away on the start screen and the next scan shows what grew.
- It speaks your language. The filter understands
photos, over 500 MB,not modified in 2 years, in any combination, and the drawer writes the same filter from checkboxes and scales. The interface itself comes in 18 languages. - It tells you what is safe to clear. Insights lists the usual suspects (Windows.old, caches, the Recycle Bin, stale Downloads, installers already run, build output, game libraries) with the space they hold, and the rows for empty folders and duplicate files open a window where you tick what goes.
- It deletes what Explorer cannot. A folder nested in itself hundreds of levels deep crashes Explorer; SpaceSharp shows it as a loop and removes it.
- It looks the way you want. Twenty-four palettes, twelve looks for the window, cushion shading with its own light direction, and a palette editor for your own colors, all with a live preview.
- It never surprises you. Deleting always goes through the Recycle Bin, the map updates without a rescan, and the only network traffic is the update check, which the portable exe does not even make.
| Scans a whole drive in seconds | Reads the NTFS file table directly (asks for administrator rights once); a parallel folder walk covers everything else. Hidden and system files included, junctions skipped. |
| One map, shaded your way | Folders are frames, files are cushioned boxes. Shading depth, spread, tone, fade and light direction, title bars, text colors and grid are controls in Settings with a live preview. |
| Filter in plain words | videos over 500MB older than 1 year dims everything else and keeps the layout, so you see where the matches are. A drawer with type tiles, size and age scales and quick filters writes the same filter for you. |
| Insights view | One click swaps the map for the numbers: what is scanned, free and safe to clear; space by file type; places that are usually safe to empty with one Recycle button; when files were last changed; the largest folders and files; games, media, developer leftovers, Downloads, hard links, small and empty, deep and long; what grew, shrank and appeared since last scan. Every row is a click back to the map, filtered to it. |
| Empty folders and duplicates | The Small and empty row lists every folder with no files in it, ticked and ready for the Recycle Bin. The Duplicates row finds files with identical contents (size, then the first bytes, then a full hash, so little is read and it runs on several threads), shows them in sets, and keeps the first or the newest of each with one click. |
| Deletes what Explorer cannot | "Delete permanently" reaches paths too long for Explorer and walks a folder hundreds of levels deep without recursion; the Deep and long row spots a folder nested inside itself and offers to delete the repeats. |
| Achievements | Twenty-one of them, announced with a toast and listed under About (T). A locked one shows only its name; the hint appears once it is earned, or when you click it for a peek. |
| Remembers every scan | Every scan is saved and compared with the one before. The Changes view lays the two out as a folder table: then, now, a bar from a center line (shrank left in blue, grew right in orange), new and gone files marked, folders that open in place, a size threshold to quiet the noise, and a double-click back to the map. The Insights view's "Since last scan" card has the biggest movers. |
| Inspect anything | Size and share, where the space is inside, donuts by type and by age, and a callout when one thing holds most of a folder. |
| Twenty-four palettes, twelve looks, and your own | Twelve palettes for the dark theme, twelve for the light one, twelve hues each, and six looks per theme for the window itself. The palette editor is one list of colors you can type into, with a picker, contrast checks and a sample map. |
| Cleans up safely | Everything goes to the Recycle Bin and the map updates without a rescan. |
| Knows your keyboard | The shortcuts window draws your keyboard (QWERTY, Nordic, QWERTZ, AZERTY or Dvorak, Mac keys on a Mac) with the keys SpaceSharp uses lit up. |
Insights rebuilt as one quiet column of rows with eight new ones (games, media, developer leftovers, Downloads, hard links, small and empty, deep and long, duplicates); an empty folder scanner and a duplicate finder, both deleting to the Recycle Bin; "Delete permanently" for the folders Explorer crashes on; achievements; a start screen that says what to do first; drive tiles tinted by kind with Windows' own drive icons; a Files / Folders / Types switch that never cuts a label; a compare that no longer invents gigabytes of change between two scans a minute apart, and no longer calls the NTFS metafiles gone; 987 file types in a text file; and hard links counted once by default. The whole story is in the changelog.
For 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 (Windows on ARM runs them through x64 emulation). Get them from the latest release.
| File | Best for |
|---|---|
| SpaceSharp-win-x64.exe | One portable file. Nothing to install; you download new versions yourself. |
| SpaceSharp-win-x64-Setup.exe | One-click install to your profile, no admin rights, updates itself. --installto "D:\Apps\SpaceSharp" picks another folder. |
| SpaceSharp-win-x64.msi | A regular installer where you choose the folder and whether it is for you or everyone. Updates itself. |
32-bit Windows gets the same three with x86 in the name. They update from their own channel. A 32-bit process has less memory to work with, so a drive with several million files is better scanned with the x64 build.
Note
Every download is code-signed, so Windows shows a verified publisher. SmartScreen may still show "Windows protected your PC" while a new certificate earns its reputation; click More info, then Run anyway. Every release carries a SHA256SUMS.txt to check a download against.
SpaceSharp collects no data. The only network requests it makes are the update check and What's new, which read the public release list on GitHub; the portable exe makes neither, and the check can be switched off in Settings.
- Click a drive in the Drives list, or Scan folder for one folder. Windows asks for administrator rights for a drive scan; without them, protected folders are skipped and marked.
- The biggest boxes are the biggest space users. Hover for the path and size, double-click a folder to zoom in, Backspace or the mouse back button to go up.
- Right-click a box for Inspect, Open, Show in Explorer, Properties, copy, filter to its type, select its folder, Recycle Bin, or Delete permanently for what Explorer cannot open.
- Press B to switch between the map and Insights, Ctrl+F for the filter, L for the side panel with your drives and the largest files, T for your achievements, and the gear or Ctrl+, for Settings. F1 draws your keyboard with every shortcut on it.
The filter language
The drawer (Ctrl+F) has file types as tiles with a share bar, size and age scales, Files or Folders, and quick filters such as Large files and Untouched for 2 years. Its name box also takes the full syntax, and anything you type becomes picked tiles and set scales. Settings › Map › Filter layout switches to a one-row rail instead.

Settings
Everything applies at once and is saved. The pages:
- General: language, "Scan with SpaceSharp" in Explorer's right-click menu, and the command-line options.
- Behavior: the update check, drawing the map as a scan goes, how long saved scans are kept, animated zoom, and confirm before the Recycle Bin.
- Appearance: theme (match the system, light, dark) and the look: six for each theme, the GitHub Dark and GitHub Light ones drawn in GitHub's own grays.
- Treemap: a preview map of sample data pinned at the top, then Colors (palette per theme, Color by, any palette on either theme, custom palettes), Shading (cushion on or off, presets, Depth, Spread, Tone, Fade, Light from), Text and title bars, Grid and highlight, and Layout (density, bias, padding).
- Map: size measure (file size or size on disk), free space, merge single-folder chains, hover details, filter layout, side panel.
- Scanning: fast NTFS scan, names to leave out, hidden and system files, hard links counted once.
Color by is Top folder, Depth (like SpaceMonger), or File type (with a legend); what changed since the last scan has a view of its own, Changes, next to Map and Insights. Palettes, dark: Graphite, Ocean, Sunset, Forest, Aurora, Berry, Mineral, Twilight, Copper, Prism, Monochrome, Color-blind safe; light: Pastel, Paper, Candy, Nordic, Earth, Meadow, Sorbet, Sea glass, Terracotta, Lilac, Retro, Color-blind safe (light). The toolbar's palette control opens a tabbed picker (Dark theme, Light theme, Custom) with a strip of each palette's twelve colors and a line about it; picking one made for the other theme switches to that theme unless Settings › Treemap says to use any palette on either theme. Your own come from Settings › Treemap › Custom palettes: twelve folder colors, the file tint and the type colors, typed as hex or picked with sliders, with a sample map beside them. They are JSON files in %LocalAppData%\SpaceSharp\palettes, where hand-written ones go too:

dotnet testThe app is SpaceSharp (Avalonia, drawn with Skia) on top of SpaceSharp.Core (plain .NET: the tree, the layout, scanning, scan files, strings, settings, looks). The NuGet dependencies are Avalonia and Velopack. SpaceSharp.Tests covers what does not need a screen; GitHub Actions runs them on every push. Releases are built and signed on the developer's PC with installer\release.ps1. How the scanner, layout, renderer, filter and updater work, and where to add a palette, a file type or a translation, is in DEVELOPING.md. Every screen, setting and shortcut is described at docs.spacesharp.app.
- The macOS and Linux packages are not published yet; the app builds and runs there from source.
- Size on disk is an estimate for files stored inside the MFT and leaves out alternate data streams.
- With "Count hard links once" off (it is on by default), a folder walk counts hard-linked data once per name, so
WinSxScan look bigger than it is. The file-table scan always counts it once. - Junctions and symbolic links are not followed; the target counts where it lives.
- Online-only cloud files show their full size in file-size mode; size on disk shows the local footprint.
