What & why

  • Engine: the result inferred for a target requirement no longer depends on the order of the links in a mapping set. Full-coverage links (equal/superset) decide the result. Partial links (subset/intersect) only lower it to non_compliant or not_assessed, and cap it at partially_compliant only for targets with no full-coverage link. Example: ISO 27001 A.8.14, mapped from CCM BCR-11 (superset) and DCS-18 (intersect), was compliant or partially compliant depending on link order; it is now compliant.
  • Table mode: mapping inferences are shown with the shared MappingInferenceView component, which reads the current multi-source source_requirement_assessments. The inline code only read the legacy single-source field.

Behaviour change: stored audits are not modified. New inferences may differ: audits created from a baseline, map-from, and the framework mapping options. The main case is a compliant full-coverage link plus compliant partial links, which now gives compliant instead of partially compliant.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Mapping results for a target are now consistent regardless of link-processing order. Results account for evidence across linked assessments, including full and partial coverage, and resolve conflicting evidence consistently.
  • Improvements
    • Table-mode requirement assessments continue to show mapping-inference details, including coverage, suggested results, scores, and annotations when available.
    • Mapping-inference toggle text is more visible in dark mode.

Walkthrough

The mapping engine now derives target results from accumulated facts across mapping links. Tests cover link-order independence and separate inference data for multi-hop targets. The table-mode page uses MappingInferenceView to render inference details.

Changes: Mapping inference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Aggregate mapping facts per target
backend/core/mappings/engine.py, backend/app_tests/api/test_mapping_engine.py, documentation/architecture/decisions/mapping-inference-proven-facts.md
The engine accumulates facts from mapped links and selects a result after processing all links. Contradictory facts trigger a retry using equal and superset links. If those facts also contradict, the engine uses the most restrictive full-coverage result. Tests cover result combinations, link-order independence, and separate inference data for multi-hop targets. The architecture decision describes the rules and expected outcomes.
Render mapping inference
frontend/src/routes/(app)/(third-party)/compliance-assessments/[id=uuid]/table-mode/+page.svelte, frontend/src/lib/components/ComplianceAssessment/MappingInferenceView.svelte
When an inference has a result, the page passes the inference object to MappingInferenceView instead of rendering the details inline. The component's toggle button adds a dark-mode text color.

bot feedbacks:

backend/core/mappings/engine.py
● 415 [correctness] Only the result is order-independent. With copy_scores, an equal/superset link that comes after a subset/intersect link finds existing_target already filled and merges only the m2m fields, so the full link's status, observation and score are never copied.
● 427 [correctness] The first write under copy_scores is a shallow copy of src_assessment, so from hop 2 on the source's mapping_inference dict is the same object in every target. The code then changes it in place (result, used_path, source_requirement_assessments).
● 427 [correctness] Between two full-coverage links, the score and other copied fields come from whichever link is processed first. A later partial link overwrites the score, so the last writer wins. Only 'result' is aggregated in an order-independent way.
● 539 [correctness] When a partial link has a gap, whether it overrides the full-coverage result depends on the result_order ranking, and the outcomes are inconsistent. A not_assessed gap downgrades a compliant result but leaves partially_compliant unchanged, and any partial gap replaces not_applicable.
● 532 [correctness] If a target is reached only by subset/intersect links whose sources are all not_applicable, _partial_link_result returns None and mapping_inference['result'] stays ''.
● 520 [simplification] The merged result is recomputed and written back on every link inside the loop. Doing it in one pass over the touched targets after the loop would be simpler and less fragile.
frontend/src/routes/(app)/(third-party)/compliance-assessments/[id=uuid]/table-mode/+page.svelte
● 1348 [ux] With the switch to MappingInferenceView, table mode now shows the sources list collapsed by default, and the toggle is hard-coded text-blue-800 with no dark-mode variant.
backend/app_tests/api/test_mapping_engine.py
● 531 [test-coverage] The order-independence tests check only 'result' for a single hop. They don't cover status, observation or score, or hop 2 and beyond.

The PR makes the inferred result order-independent only in the simplest case: one hop, one target, and only the result field. Score, status and observation still depend on the order the links come in. From the second hop on, targets share one mapping-inference record, so one target can show another's result and sources. The first three findings are older bugs in this function, not caused by this PR. The new tests only check the result for one hop, so they don't catch any of this.

The two to fix before merging:

  • Shared record at hop 2+ (engine.py:427): because the PR now writes each target's merged result back into that shared record, the wrong result shows up directly in the UI.
  • Empty result when every partial source is not applicable (engine.py:532): table mode hides the inference panel for that requirement entirely.

One more problem sits outside the diff, so it's not in the list: best_s the size of the records, which means the first path effectively always wins.

A few things before merge:

  • A partially compliant source behind a partial link no longer lowers a full-coverage result. _partial_link_result turns both a compliant source (the cap) and a partially compliant source (a real gap) into partially_compliant, and only non_compliant / not_assessed reach partial_gaps, so the real gap is dropped whenever a full-coverage link exists. Repro on the shipped ISO 27001:2013 → 2022 mapping: A.8.32 ← A.12.1.2 (equal) + A.14.2.2 (subset). With A.12.1.2 compliant and A.14.2.2 partially compliant, a 2022 audit created from the 2013 baseline stores A.8.32 = compliant, and map-from previews compliant too. main gives partially_compliant here in both link orders, so this case wasn't order-dependent before. For a subset link the gap sits inside the target by definition. Taking the gap from the raw source result fixes it:

    src_result = src_assessment.get("result")
    result = self._partial_link_result(src_result)
    partial_results[dst] = self._most_restrictive_result(partial_results.get(dst), result)
    if src_result in ("non_compliant", "partially_compliant", "not_assessed"):
        partial_gaps[dst] = self._most_restrictive_result(partial_gaps.get(dst), src_result)

    A.8.14 (superset + intersect, both compliant) still gives compliant, your five cases are unchanged, and every pair and triple of links stays order-independent. Worth adding [("equal", "compliant"), ("subset", "partially_compliant")] → partially_compliant to the parametrized cases, and updating the "Partial links only lower it to non_compliant or not_assessed" line in the description.

Small one: score and status on the same target still follow link order, unlike the result now. With equal (score 90, done) + intersect (score 20, in progress), the target gets score 20 in both orders, and no status at all when the intersect link comes first, because the copy path only merges M2M into an existing target. Pre-existing, fine as a follow-up.

- Result read from the facts each link proves about its target: exact when the facts settle it, otherwise the lowest result they allow. On contradictory inputs, the full-coverage links decide.
- Each target gets its own mapping_inference record (it was shared between targets from hop 2 on), and a target with no proven facts gets not_assessed instead of an empty result.
- ADR: documentation/architecture/decisions/mapping-inference-proven-facts.md
- Tests per ADR table row; dark-mode colour on the inference toggle.

- Status and observation come from the full-coverage links; scores from those with comparable scores, else from comparable partial links.
- Among several links, one supplies each group: most restrictive result, then lowest score, then source URN.
- Tests: the review case (equal 90/done + intersect 20/in progress) in both orders; every pair of links gives the same fields in both orders.
