fix(client): stop re-traversing the payload on every state change - #1151
User feedback on 4.0.0: a simple project with a slider and a math calculation, fine with the previous version, now freezes the entire page.
Cause
setupReactivity (host side, runtime/plugins/view/client.ts) refreshed the DevTools UI through watch([payload, colorMode, metrics, timeline], …, { deep: true }). A deep watch re-traverses its whole source synchronously on every mutation, so each useState write costs O(payload size). The debounce only applied to the callback, not to the traversal. This runs on the inspected page whether the panel is open or not.
Fix
Same sources, same host:update:reactivity hook, but tracked by an effect whose scheduler is debounced (100 ms trailing, as before). A mutation only schedules the refresh; the traversal (which re-collects dependencies, so new nested values are tracked) runs once when changes settle. traverse covers the same shapes as Vue's deep watch: refs, arrays, Maps, Sets and plain objects.
Measurements
Headless Chromium. A slider bound to useState drives a 20k-iteration calculation and 100 bars. Each run is 600 input events, one per animation frame (an ideal run is ~10 s). The payload also holds a 20k-item useState array, standing in for fetched data.

Without the large payload nothing froze on main either, so the cost scales with payload size. Post-GC heap was flat across repeated drags in every configuration, so I found no leak in the page. With the Vue DevTools panel open the heap grows ~6 MB and then plateaus, which looks like a bounded buffer.
Also checked end to end: the Payload tab updates when the slider changes (50 → 777), and a mutation nested inside the large state still triggers host:update:reactivity.
pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck and pnpm test:unit pass.
Note for merging: this drops the now-unused watch import. #1150 adds watch calls to the same file, so whichever of the two lands second needs watch back in the import.
The same deep watch already existed in v3.4.4, so this fixes a real freeze but may not be the whole v3 → v4 difference the reporters saw; their video and project would help confirm.

The host client refreshed the DevTools UI through a deep `watch` over
`nuxt.payload` (plus color mode and metrics). A deep watch re-traverses
its whole source on every mutation, synchronously, so with a sizeable
payload each change (e.g. every tick of a slider bound to `useState`)
became a long task and the page froze, with the panel open or not.
Track the same sources with an effect whose scheduler is debounced: a
mutation only schedules the refresh, and the sources are traversed again
(re-collecting dependencies) once the changes settle.

The client plugin replaces its deep watcher with a reactive effect that traverses the Nuxt payload, colour mode, loading metric and timeline metrics. The new traverse helper handles refs, arrays, Maps, Sets and plain objects. It skips previously visited objects and values marked __v_skip. The scheduler debounces effect reruns and the host:update:reactivity hook by 100 ms with trailing execution.
Most changes remain tracked, but enumerable symbol-keyed mutations can leave the Devtools view stale; add symbol-aware traversal before merging.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the fix stops the client from re-traversing the payload on every state change. The raw summary confirms that setupReactivity now uses a debounced effect instead of a deep watch. The title is specific and matches the changeset. It uses the conventional commit prefix fix(client), which fits a bug fix in the client code.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is directly related to the changeset. It explains the cause of the freeze in setupReactivity, which used a deep watch over payload, colorMode, metrics and timeline. It describes the fix, which replaces the deep watch with a debounced effect and keeps the host:update:reactivity hook. It also gives benchmark results, a repro app, a merge note about the watch import, and the test status.

Track enumerable symbol-keyed properties.
If a reactive payload object has an existing symbol-keyed property, this loop does not read its value. A change to that property alone therefore does not schedule host:update:reactivity, and the client revision remains stale. Vue's previous deep watch reads enumerable symbol-keyed properties. Add the same traversal here. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
